What is the difference between foremilk and hindmilk?

During breastfeeding, the milk changes from foremilk to hindmilk. Here’s how they differ:

  1. Foremilk: This milk is lighter and more watery, providing hydration and quick energy due to its high lactose content.
  2. Hindmilk: Toward the end of a feeding session, the milk becomes creamier and higher in fat, supporting growth and satisfying your baby’s hunger longer. Ensuring your baby nurses long enough on each breast allows them to access both types of milk, which supports their growth and keeps them fuller longer. If your baby is quickly switching between breasts, they may not get as much hindmilk, so aim for more extended nursing on one side before switching.
