What is postpartum bleeding, and how long does it last?

Postpartum bleeding, also known as lochia, is the discharge of blood, mucus, and uterine tissue following childbirth.

  • Duration: It can last anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks, typically decreasing in volume over time.
  • Phases:
    1. Lochia Rubra: Bright red discharge for the first 3-4 days.
    2. Lochia Serosa: Pink or brown discharge from about day 4 to 10.
    3. Lochia Alba: Yellowish-white discharge that can last up to 6 weeks.
