How do I safely swaddle my baby?

Swaddling can be a comforting way to help your baby feel secure, but it’s essential to swaddle safely:

  1. Choose the right blanket: Use a thin, breathable blanket or a swaddle wrap designed for safe swaddling. Avoid heavy blankets, which can lead to overheating.
  2. Lay the blanket down: Spread the blanket on a flat surface in a diamond shape and fold down the top corner about 6 inches.
  3. Place your baby on the blanket: Lay your baby on their back with their neck at the folded edge, making sure their face is clear of the blanket.
  4. Secure the arms: Gently place their arms down along their sides. Fold the left corner of the blanket over your baby’s left arm and chest, tucking it snugly underneath them.
  5. Wrap the bottom: Fold the bottom corner up, leaving room for your baby’s legs to move freely and promoting healthy hip development.
  6. Finish with the right side: Take the right corner and wrap it over your baby’s right arm and body, tucking it securely.

Safety Tips: Always place your baby on their back to sleep. Make sure the swaddle is snug around the arms but loose around the hips to avoid hip dysplasia. Stop swaddling once your baby shows signs of rolling over, as it’s safer for them to sleep without the swaddle at that point.
